A conservative approach for Speedy Mare in the Colonel Reeves Stakes

Ascot trainer Mitchell Pateman admits the hurdle added another level of difficulty for This’ll Testya to win the G3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) at Ascot on Saturday.

After wide gates in the Crawford Stakes (1000m) and the Prince Of Wales Stakes (1000m), This’Ll Testya, who finished second to Miss Conteki, will contest barrier 12.

Initially released by This’ll Testya’s wide starting position, Mitchell Pateman is gaining confidence from her first run in this preparation when she was taken off the pace.

Pateman will leave the riding instructions to Lucy Warwick but expects the top jockey to take a more conservative approach to the in-form seven-year-old mare.

“It’s not ideal, she has drawn all three starts of this training normally,” Pateman told Tabradiu.

“That’s Lucy’s (Warwick) problem now, there’s not much I can do about it.

“We’ll probably go a little conservative on her, a little like her first time.”

“Hopefully Money Matters or Comes A Time or something is lobbing in front of her and she can be three deep with cover.

“There will be no chance of crossing the Wilchino or the Indian Pacific, so there is no point in running out.

“We’re going to get off very quietly and she’s shown that if anything, it’s better to ride anyway.”

“If you can drive her three deep with cover, they’ll know she’s there.”

This’ll Testya has a $8 chance with Tabtouch. Defending champion Colonel Reeves Stakes Elite Street is the $3.20 favourite.

Top filly Miss Conteki, unbeaten this campaign, is next at $3.80. Wilchino is $6.50 and Red Can Man for Steve Wolfe is $9.50.

This’ll Testya achieved a career high in February when she first gained blacktype status in the Cyril Flower Stakes (1200m).

Pateman says a win in the Colonel Reeves Stakes stamps This’ll Testya’s credentials for her next start in the G1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

“It will be interesting to see how they measure up on Saturday,” Pateman said.

“She wasn’t far off the mark in her first two runs.

“But Elite Street is obviously test material.

“It will be interesting to see how we stack up against him.
