Horse racing The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – 1/10/2022

A dead heat resulted at Epsom, Zougotcha confirmed her status as Sydney’s top 3YO filly, while the barrier test took place at Turnbull. All this and more in this week’s edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

KEY NEWS:

Ellsberg/Top Ranked Share Epsom

Randwick was the scene of some fine finishes on Saturday, the best of which was the Epsom Handicap (1600m). Ellsberg and Top Ranked had an epic battle for the last 100 or so, and on the track it looked like Ellsberg had just arrived. Slow month then said maybe Top Ranked but the photo said they couldn’t be split. Ellsberg gave Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou their first Group 1 since forming a training partnership.

Zougotcha Dominant In Flight

It was a case of the Golden Rose formation vs. The Rest and it ended up being a one-act affair with Zougotcha emerging as Sydney’s most dominant filly this season, winning clear and winning in the She’s Extreme with early leader North Star. Lass in third place. Fireburn was back and never factored in, batting fourth.

Smokin Romans Surprise In Turnbull

The Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday is traditionally a race where you have to run well if you want to be a Cup or Cox Plate. But it’s as clear as mud after the race when Smokin Romans won the race after sitting off the pace, winning clearly and winning well in a race where they didn’t change position. The victory confirmed that the victory of Naturalism was no accident.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:

An arrogant victory by Private Eye in Gilgai. Market support suggested he was traveling for the kill and indeed it ended up being a kill. He spanked them and it was a win, where really, why wouldn’t he be interested in the slot holder? it was electric, running time and has the top side in the tank. Brilliant comeback.

DEBIT OF THE WEEK:

Platinum Jubilee was a dynamic Gimcrack winner. I was on Perfect Offer and she looked like she was going to fight back and win, but then Platinum Jubilee came out of nowhere and her last 100m was brilliant. Did she beat a lot? I say no, but I’m excited to see how she does in the future.

RIDE OF THE WEEK:

2kg claim on Dylan Gibbons in town is an absolute steal. He is a star and his front steer aboard Hosier at Randwick was a peach. This horse’s grand final is over a month away, so I’m sure that was on his mind. He rated it perfect and eh, he goes to this guy’s places.

BEAT OF THE WEEK:

The jockeys will rest this week. I do crack in Moonee Valley. This track has been funny so far this season. The interior has been red hot this season and it was evident last week. However, Friday night was an embarrassment and it’s scary how the Manikato/Cox Plate Carnival could have ended.
