Icebath provides global inspiration

The improving four-year-old Global Ausbred will be looking for his first stakes win in the Summer Cup

One thing Brad Widdup has learned from the amazing career of Group 1 winner Icebath is that sometimes you have to roll the dice in racing.

Icebath was rallying from a comparative 78 wins when Colette fell in front of him in the 2020 Golden Eagle and started at double figures when Cascadian fired in the Doncaster Mile the following year.

In that vein, Widdup will test the promising Global Ausbred gelding’s accreditation in Monday’s Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick, where the four-year-old will take on seasoned contenders including Sky Lab and Lion’s Roar.

“Icebath wouldn’t have gotten to where she has if we didn’t walk her in certain races,” Widdup said.

“They’re seasoned horses, but it’s the right time of year. I can’t handle it anymore and I think it’s worth throwing stumps with the form it’s in.

“That will tell us how far it is.

While the Global Ausbred contested this year’s Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m), Boxing Day will be his first blacktype entry in open company.

Still whole, the Global Ausbred put the writing on the wall for a good campaign ahead with a solid fourth first-up behind Vilana in the Silver Eagle (1300m) and comes into Monday’s race off a 2000m win at Randwick on December 17.

It was this performance that earned him a chance at the Summer Cup, in which he will carry a minimum of 53 kg for Alysha Collett.

“We finally got the weights down (last start) and things went his way,” Widdup said.

“It was a good, hard, overwhelming victory.

“He’s picked up well and looks fresh.

A field of 14 has been accepted for the Summer Cup, with John O’Shea paying for three runners, led by 2021 Randwick Guineas winner Lion’s Roar, who produced his best performance since returning from injury lay-off, last starting as stablemate Kirwin’s second Lane at The Ingham (1600m).
