Gong looms as the next target for Ladies Day Cup winner Kirwan’s Lane

Consistent campaigner Kirwan’s Lane captured his second Hawkesbury feature mile of the year, rallying late to beat local hope Momack in the Listed Ladies Day Cup.

Backing up to start the favourite, the John O’Shea-trained gelding caused some anxious moments for his favorite backers as he slowly accelerated under his 59kg top weight but dug deep under Tom Sherry to take the lead moments later reeled in Momack. neck.

Frontman was third, another three-quarters of a length further back.

The victory continued Sherry’s excellent record at Kirwan’s Lane, where he has now ridden seven times with four wins and two placings, including his stakes wins in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup in April and Thursday’s Ladies Day Cup, both over 1600m.

“The race was run to suit us, they went at a nice gallop and we had a lovely, economical run,” Sky Racing’s Sherry said.

“He just hit a bit of a flat spot before straightening up and then Jason (Collett on The Frontman) came in with a really quick run and headed towards us. I was a bit scared to be honest but he’s so tough and genuine.

“He was a great horse for me and he got off the canvas and really attacked the line.

O’Shea stable representative Tom Charlton said Kirwan’s Lane was likely to have his next start in the $1 million The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange two weeks from Saturday.

“Hopefully he’ll get some weight relief there and it’s another big sweat, hopefully we can target,” Charlton said.

Momack ran the race of his life for local trainer Blake Ryan, running and kicking hard before Kirwan’s Lane caught him late on.

Ryan was delighted with his performance, especially considering the horse was his first blacktype runner.

“I couldn’t be more proud of him, he’s blown away,” Ryan said.

“He’s my first runner in a stakes race and we just fell.
