Mega Millions backed players last night for its 22nd consecutive drawing. The winning numbers were 1-3-6-44-51 and the Golden Mega Ball was 7. The draw mega multiplier was 3x.

The final Mega Millions jackpot of $685 million had the distinction of being the largest lottery prize ever awarded in the last week of a year. But again, no ticket matched the winning combination of six numbers to unlock the jackpot. The fund reaches an estimated $785 million for the game’s next drawing on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

Lottery officials predict revenue will continue at unprecedented levels. Mega Millions and its main competitor, Powerball, estimate their jackpots based on sales information from retailers. But the estimated jackpots typically don’t increase by $100 million between draws.

Mega Millions, however, says the game has been robust throughout the 2022 holiday season, and with the jackpot continuing to keep the game in the headlines, officials believe such increased interest will carry over into the New Year for the next game draw.

2023 will be rich for someone

Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot of $785 million would rank as the sixth largest lottery jackpot in US history. It is also the fourth largest Mega Millions jackpot.

Mega Millions awarded a $1.537 billion prize to a South Carolina player in October 2018 and a $1.337 billion jackpot to a winner in Illinois last July. Mega Millions also awarded a $1.05 billion prize in January 2021 to a lucky player in Michigan.

Mega Millions will at some point change someone’s life in a big way in 2023. But if history tells us anything, the $785 million jackpot won’t be hit for a few more draws.

On only three previous occasions has the Mega Millions jackpot topped $700 million, and all three times those rolls have continued over $1 billion,” a Mega Millions statement explained. “One was in January just two years ago when the jackpot was finally won in Michigan for $1.05 billion on January 22, 2021.”

“Will history repeat itself with another billion dollar win in January?” Mega Millions thought.

Although the odds of each ticket hitting the jackpot remain constant at just over one in 302.5 million, the odds of someone hitting the jackpot improve when the stakes are increased. That’s because more ticket number combinations out of the 302.5 million unique possibilities are likely covered.

Friday Winners

Although no one matched last night’s six winning numbers, the Mega Millions drawing still awarded more than 2.77 million tickets. Most of the winners simply won back their $2 bet by matching the golden Mega Ball.

A ticket sold in Ohio matched the five white balls but not the Mega Ball to win the game’s second-best prize of $1 million. Another 82 tickets matched four of the white balls and the Mega Ball to win $10,000. Sixteen of those tickets had purchased the optional $1 Megaplier to triple their winnings to $30,000.

One last major US lottery drawing remains in 2022. The final Powerball drawing of the year takes place tonight at 10:50 PM EST with an estimated jackpot of $246 million.
