Tony Gollan adds Skirt The Law to strengthen his hand heading into next month’s Magic Millions

Skirt The Law’s win in the Zousain First Yearlings Handicap for two-year-olds was an important qualifying milestone for next month’s $2 million 2yo Classic Magic Millions (1200m) on the Gold Coast.

Making her second career outing at Doomben on Saturday, Skirt The Law cruised to an impressive five-length victory over 1200m and continued her perfect record after also winning over 1050m there on November 12.

Ryan Maloney’s Skirt The Law ($1.35 fav) joins stablemate Mighty – a winner on Gold Coast debut on November 26 – at the head of Gollan’s attack on January’s youth feature.

“She’s improved so much since the other day,” Moloney said.

“She knew what today was about. She was a little more awake and treading cleanly.

“With two-year-olds (like) you don’t know that one day they’re here and the next day they’re gone.

“Tony knows when to push and when to let go so she’s in good hands.

Gollan’s management went into the game with a deliberate 21-day gap between those runs and a decision on whether Skirt The Law will run again before the Gold Coast meeting on January 14 has yet to be made.

“We felt coming into the race first that she was underpowered, but she surprised a lot of people with how well she went,” Gollan said.

“We’ve always had a good opinion of this mare and today you could see the improvement.

“Being able to give her 21 days until today was key and I think she’s got more to come.”

“We’re five weeks out from the Magic Millions, so we have time to back off and then put our foot down and attack the race. If she were to win, Skirt The Law would also be eligible for a $500,000 ‘ladies’ bonus’ with all her female ownership.

“I knew she would enjoy the 1200 meters more than the 1000 and we will be heading to ‘Coast’ with a filly we know will run a strong 1200.

Second favorite Torque I Tee ($3.80) finished second to Arbat ($16) to round out the secondary by another five lengths.

Gollan suggested Mighty could be seen again in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on 24 December.

Despite doing a lot of track work together, the two horses were unlikely to face each other in a race until Magic Millions Day.
