The trainer wins with the first ever runner

Rory Hunter trains a winner with a debut runner

Stony Creek wouldn’t have been expected to produce a headline moment on Tuesday, but it was a day to remember for new trainer Rory Hunter as his first runner claimed his first victory.

Before Hunter took over training Soonga, the four-year-old gelding had three starts previously with a best finish of seventh in a field of 13 in a maiden at Bendigo over 1400 meters on November 2.

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr trained Soong for these three starts, after which Hunter took over the horse’s training.

“You couldn’t have dreamed of a better start (and) what a way to go,” Hunter said after winning the Fish Creek Hotel Maiden (1000m).

“I think just being able to let the horse roll and feel comfortable in his rhythm was crucial to his performance today.

Jake Noonan’s Soonga started at $6.50 and won by two lengths over the Andrew Homann-trained Sports Choice ($18) with Hear Me Out ($3.10) third.

Champion trainer Tony Noonan’s Hunter has another runner nominated this week with Aragon, who has a chance to start at Warrnambool on Friday.
