Watch ๐Ÿ“บ Tom Prebble goes first winner

Tom Prebble has as his father and mother one of the most successful Australian jockeys of this century, who are part of one of Australia’s most famous horse racing families and on Tuesday he joined them as a winning rider.

The 20-year-old drove his first winner when he partnered Scientific with Rob Blacker to victory in Racing Victoria’s Rising Stars Series at Mornington.

Prebble’s sire is Brett Prebble, who counts the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Golden Slipper among his Australian feature wins in a career that also included a long stint as one of Hong Kong’s top jockeys.

His mother is Maree Payne, a former jockey who is part of the famous Payne family, which includes Michelle, the only woman to ride a Melbourne Cup winner, and Cox Plate hoop winner Patrick.

This line ensured he was one of the leading members of his Racing Victoria apprentices, and Scientific’s victory pleased him to follow in his parents’ footsteps.

“It’s definitely a relief to have everyone else putting a bit of pressure on me, but I’m glad it’s over,” he said.

“My mum and dad made me do 100 other sports, they tried to keep me away from it, but I ended up here (racing) so I’m glad I did.”

Scientific’s trip was his seventh of the race and his second of the day, having previously finished last aboard the $2.80 favorite Waterworld, trained by his master Peter Moody.

Prebble settled Scientific in the back half of the field in Tuesday’s 1200m race but cut his way through the pack on the turn before taking the lead 200m from home.

The race finished shortly after and on the Prebble and Scientific ($5) line they had two lengths available over the $4 favorite The Sisters.

“I felt as I got around the corner, she just kept lifting and lifting and when I hit the straight I thought, ‘Wow, I’m passing everyone here,'” he said.

โ€œShe let down really well. It’s super.”
